countdown begins

japanese journey

Last week I immersed in japanese literature and it was a lot of true feelings, poetic moments and rivers of tears all together.

I started with a movie, a manga movie from the late 80's that I hadn't watched yet. I first bought the book on Amazon (still waiting for it to arrive) and it was such a lovely coincidence to see that the manga movie version was going to be aired on tv this past thursday.

It's a masterpiece, that's all I can say. Realist and so sad. It's called "Grave of the fireflies", and it's about war, so don't show it to children under 10. I kept on crying 1 hour after the movie was over...

The second was a book, a lovely, beautiful book, a poetic novel about a cat but not only. Unfortunatly It looks like that it's not available at Amazon America so I don't know the name in english, in french it's called "the cat that camed from the sky" and it's by Takashi Hiraide.

Love the details and the poetry on each phrase of japanese literature and I've already bought some other books that I can't wait to receive and start reading, this is what I ordered:

Fields of green

Fields of green, originally uploaded by Sofia Barão.

It's been a few days of sun, green fields and blue skies. Temperatures rise and the sun is high in the sky, flowers are everywhere and I can finally put a dress without boots :)
Weather has been perfect around Paris, hope it will continue.

I've been working, working and making good food. I'm more and more obsessed about organic food, cosmetics and well... I guess anything organic.

I've changed all my "bad" cosmetics into organic ones, I'm trying to put all my family into this too, but, that's a little bit harder than I thought.
It's been a year without milk (cow milk) and my skin has changed, I have no longer any acne and I can't believe that I've suffered all this time because of milk.

I've been published in the summer issue of Artful Blogging but has I haven't received the magazine yet, I don't know what my article looks like. I've been receiving mails and comments from very nice people from around the world (I'll be answering you all very soon, sorry for the delay) thanks to this issue.
I'm really honored to have my very first paper press in the US with Stampington as I do love their publications. Thank you Stacie :)
As soon as I have the issue, I'll post pictures.

What have you been loving this days ?
As for me, here goes:

- to be out in the sun
- warm
- prepare organic and healthy food
- may, I like the month of may a lot
- to be published on Artful Blogging, yeah !!!
- I even lost some weight with all this good food
- no more boots for at least 5 months
- beetroot cake, delicious (photos soon and recipe too )
- organic fashion can also be cute

Muguet porte-bonheur

Muguet porte-bonheur, originally uploaded by Sofia Barão.

Today it's a holiday here in France, it's Labour day.

A very old tradition from 1561 is still alive in every french home. Every May 1st we give Lilly of the Valley to the people we love.
Lilly of the Valley is supposed to bring luck until the next year.

It's also the promise of sunnier days ahead :)

This morning my husband went to get me some Lilly of the Valley like every year, I love this tradition and this flowers delicate perfume :)

Have a wonderful day!

Paris Exhibition

paris exhibition, originally uploaded by Sofia Barão.

Last thursday we went to the opening of Cimaise-Baby, an exhibition in a gallery in Paris where I have one artwork (you can't really see it well here because of the reflection, sorry I'll post a scan from the exhibition book soon).

It was really nice and after that we went to see beautiful Paris and eat at a wonderful restaurant (forgot to take pictures). It was windy that night as you can see on my face :) :) :)

For those of you who would like to make the recipe from last post, you can go see the recipe in french here (you will find wonderful recipes here, I used dried grapes instead of almonds), sorry, I have to translate it but I have no time lately. Promise I'll do it this week.

Tahin and dried grapes cookie

Tahin cookies, originally uploaded by Sofia Barão.

I've been cooking a lot lately. I love to cook but sometimes I have no time so this past weeks I've been trying new recipes and trying also to go deeper in the organic food world.

I already used organic products since I was little with my mom but now I would like to make my own cookies and cakes. Stop buying all those toxic all-ready made cakes.

I eat a lot of dried fruits instead of cakes but every aftenoon I like to take my tea with a cookie.

These are my Tahin organic cookies I made, they are delicious and I tasted sesame butter for the first time and I love it on cookies.
I'm also reusing one of my tea cans for the cookies, this way the cookies will be light free.
They are really easy to make.

I'll be posting other organic food I made soon :)

Back to work

Started at the museum on saturday for 5 months, next vacations will be of 2 months long but only in late september. Oh well, there are good things and bad things in this kind of work, right ?

This morning (april 7th) I woke up to see that it had snowed all night, SNOW ???? This can't be possible, in April, in Paris ???? But yes it's true.... I don't know if this is a good thing !!!! I doubt it !!!

Not much to tell you today, oh yes I have been accepted for a group show in Chicago, USA in August at the Woman made Gallery and for the "Her Mark" publication too, which is a publication of artwork and poetry, can't wait to see it. I'm happy about this.
Have a nice day, hopefully with more sun and less cold than here.

Quand elle sourit

New artwork finished.
I love to work with old photos of women, they mean so much to my eyes.
Maybe it's because I lost my mom at a young age and that I only have 2 or 3 photos of her.
I guess I keep searching for her (or pieces of her) among all the ancient photos I can find.

Design in Paris

Last november I received an email from July Huang, a taiwanese writer asking me if I would like to be featured in a book about designers and artists from Paris, of course I said yes ! Thanks July :)

The book is now released in Taiwan and I'll be receiving my copy soon.
Here is a scan July sent me and I like it already :)
Can't wait to see it in my hands and also to see the other artists featured.

I'm officially on holidays starting today for 5 weeks, yes yes, 5 :)
I have projects to finish, others to start, a bunch of exhibitions in Paris to go, a ton of books to read, a lot of walks to stroll along the countryside and Paris, a family to visit and a husband to care :) so I guess I'll be busy and that time will pass by very fast !

Spring and flea markets

That time of the year has arrived. Flea markets are here. They come with the spring.
This sunday went to the first flea market of my region and found a tresure :) a big Paris school map from the 40's. Love it.

Also this weekend I saw the first blossoms, almond blossoms.
Today it's raining again but I think this is a good time for cinema. This afternoon I'm going to see Paris.

A little bit of sun from ... Brazil

Even if this album is from 2002 it still is a great one that will stay. Marisa Monte (wonderful brazilian singer, composer and producer as she is an independant artist) creates a new group called tribalistas with 2 other great brazilian singers, the album is a master piece. Maybe you heard "Ja sei namorar" the first single.

Here is my favorite song from the album "Velha Infancia" means old childhood and it almost brings me tears to my eyes each time I hear it (also because it's my language of course).

There are some voices like that, you don't know why but you fell in love since the first time you hear them, Marisa Monte is one of those voices for me, I follow her career from the first song I heard in 1991, "Beija eu" and that was it, I was hooked...
Please check her latest albums, they are beautiful, especially Universo ao meu redor which is an album about the roots of samba (even the collage artwork on the album is beautiful, artwork from Beatriz Milhazes of course).
Infinito Particular is her latest original album, a pure moment !
Hope you'll enjoy this musical journey.

happy valentine's day

Hello Sun !

The week has been smooth and I'm finally getting more and more inspiration to do art or anything else, actually !

Here's what I'm loving this week :

one winter night

one winter night, originally uploaded by Sofia Barão.

January is finally gone and the days are now getting longer, I love to see the darkness of winter nights being chased away by the light.
I also love these darker days but 3 months only not the whole year :)

The other day while getting home from the museum I took some photos of this lightned trees that are on my way home, they look so wonderful in this cold and dark winter nights.

Yael Naim - New soul

This is the latest song that I've been listening, makes my think of summertime :)

Yesterday I gave some new springfull colors and a new banner to my website.

Holga prints

Holga prints, originally uploaded by Sofia Barão.

Here is one of my projects for this new year. Holga prints .
They will look wonderful on a glass frame.

I'll be having different prints (2) for sale each month on my etsy shop, this first series is about time, an old chair and an old luggage, you can really see how the Holga adds that different feeling to the photos that I love so much.
Hope you'll like them.
